The karaoke tour bus guide does work my nerves. Some mall parking lots have about 20 old guys out there directing cars; I always found that excessive.
I have never been bothered by a salesclerk following me. I guess if they were I'd tell 'em to take off.
You want to see pushy salespeople--go to China. I can't stand to be in a store for more than 30 sec before I am forced to flee.
And in Japan, has anyone ever said, Hi my name is Rebecca and I'll be taking care of you tonight now can I start anyone off with some smoky cheese fries or spinach dip. . .?! Talk about annoying.

I agree with michinoku2001 that the gas station attendants who stop traffic are excessive, and I will never get used to hearing "Irrashaimase!!" Every single time I go into a store! I guess that's not really a "service" though. Oh, and at some toll gates where you have to get a ticket, sometimes there is an attendant there to hand you your ticket, why don't they just put a machine there for your ticket like at other toll roads? I thought it was a waste to have someone stand there to hand you a ticket when a machine could do it.......
But I also think these things make Japan special...........

I agree with aboves. But think about it again.
Some of those services would be a great help for disabled persons and drivers when they go out alone.
Please imagine. Some disabled drivers who have a Paraplegia (lost all feeling of their legs) drive their car with thier both hands only.

You guys don't know the domestic law.
The guy who is standing at the side of the road construction is specified by the law. Cos the men at work tend not to notice the pedestrian.

The guy whose job is to stand at the side of the road and point to the sidewalk so you won't walk across the barrier into the road construction. Or the guy whose job is to stand in the road and point to the road so that drivers don't become confused and turn their cars into the construction site.

the guys out in the middle of nowhere standing there holding the "slow down" sign. lol. A pole could do his same job.
I had a friend who did it once. He said he thought up lots of movie plots while standing there. lol

In my opinion, sales clerks are excessive.
I mean, when I look at a product, a sales clerk stands nearby until I stop looking at it. This makes me feel ill at ease a bit.
I want a sales clerk to be near me just when I need help.

Without elevator girls how would anyone learn keigo? Gas pump jockeys who stop traffic for their customers seem a bit much to me. I have a Japanese driver's license, I know how to drive without anyone stopping traffic for me.
