That depends upon whether you'e talking about free or commercial. While Norton & McAfee are the most well-known commerical packages, they are average in terms of protection- Kapersky remains the highest rated product with NOD32 a close second. Many technicians consider NOD32 the best, but the interface is somewhat complicated which hurts its overall rating.

Of the free anti-virus software, Avira and Avast are the best out there. AVG is very popular but average at detecting viruses. Don't get sidetracked by people talking about firewall software, that's an entirely different animal from anti-virus.

Well Honestly, If you have a lot of memory on your system you cannot go wrong with Mcafee Or Norton, just a heads up, your computer will run dramatically slower with them present but they do work very well, If you are just looking for a Anti Virus that works well and doesnt use so many resources, Try AVG its free and it works, If you wanna know what I mean , look at someones computer with Mcafee on it, press Control Alt and Delete and open the task manager, Mcafee Alone has like 6 or 7 Active Processes running.

just like many things computer related different people will swear by different packages. I recommend reading reviews about what people say and making your choice from that. Personally I currently run nod32 on my computers. I find it is not as resource hungry as norton is, and that its virus definitions are better than whats out there currently

AVG or NOD32. both work with 64bit too. I use them both. Uses a lot less resources than others. I suggest AVG cuz NOD32 is not user friendly and generally used my pros.
Here's a free version of AVG. I suggest that, if you like it buy the retail version.

The best one is the one that stops the virus. You need more than just A\V to protect you.

What you need, Why you need it, Where to get it. All free
