We replaced the coolant temperature sensor, and it still only works with the AC on. Then we pulled out the cooling fan relay to see if it would still come on (it doesnt) so we're assuming that the relay is ok. Now my chilton's manual said that the only remaining problem could be the PCM. I havent been able to locate it in my book, or find a replacement part on the NAPA website. Should I replace the relay anyways? and if it's not the relay do i take it to the mechanic or is fixing this PCM (power control module) easy?

Your car isn't getting hot enough for the fan to turn on. The relay is fine if it responds to the A/C turning on. If you want to manually turn on the fan, you need to wire part of the fan relay to "Ground" for it to turn on. From the junction/fuse box, you can wire the relay to a screw that holds part of the radiator in place (the one closest to the fuse box)... that is grounded. I'll post some links for you to look at shortly.

Typically, the fan will not turn on until your temperature gauge is in the RED.

Here's a link for directions on installing a manual fan switch:

Go to post #31 by M. Nguyen, and he has photos of which parts of the relay to wire to ground. Since your Saturn is a '97, use the top photo. Put in the wire, slap the relay back on top and wire it to ground... it's almost certain your fan will turn on.

Good luck to you.

First, check and see if the problem is in the fan itself. remove the fan and apply direct voltage to it. if you have a test light - check where the relay is and see if you are getting power to both sides - your relay has either four or five prongs and where the relay plugs in there should be two hots - one for the electro magnet to activate the relay and the other to pass power to the fan motor. If you have two power points then you can look at the pcm or at the temp sensor because you are not getting the ground to the relay to kick it in. good luck

Why do you think something's wrong? The fan only comes on when the engine gets too hot.

HAVE YOU LET THE ENGINE RUN (without the a/c on) long enough to let it overheat? sometimes the fan dosent come on untill 230-240 degrees depending on calibration
