My teacher gave me an article about straight, white men being portrayed as idiots that can't do anything without a woman's help in ads, and told me to write a position paper on it.
I'm not sure if i want to say it's harmless humour (because straight, white men have never been discriminated against) and it should be allowed (because heterosexual white men are the only group we're still allowed to laugh about because of how politically correct we are, and without those ads, there wouldn't be good ads anymore and people wouldn't pay attention to them)
Or that it's sexual stereotyping and shouldn't be allowed (because some men get emotional about it and send in complaints to advertising companies)

I would like to say that these ads are ok, but that if they are allowed to make them about straight, white men, they should also be allowed to make them about homosexuals, african americans, etc. as long as they know where to draw the line (like where it goes from harmless humour, to actual discrimination)
Especially because i live in Canada, our society is based on humour, tolerance and diversity; so we should be able to make these ads as jokes. But if we are allowed to make them about straight, white men, we should be allowed to make them about any group

It's a tongue-in-cheek way of playing with stereotypes, and frankly, even very simple people can easily decode this as humour, so discrimination isn't really an issue.

Is it wrong? Well since society accepts these commercials then no.
The idea of wrong only goes as far as deemed acceptable by all measures. The majority of the viewers see it for what it is, humor. The straight white men that can cook and clean without a woman's help dont feel like they are being stereotyped. Its not a cruel jest aimed to bring anger. I think that sexual stereotyping is just another way of expressing ourselves through comedy. Most comedy has a basis of truth to it anyway. Would the commercial be so funny if it was a woman? I doubt most people would understand.

I don't think it is a bad thing. I mean it's always been the saying that the woman cleans and cooks and then man works. So it has stuck that way, whether true or not. I feel it is harmless humor. My boyfriend probably would die if he ate something i cooked besides pop tarts and box macaroni. I have the cleaning part covered, but i don't think it is one person's job to do any one thing around the house. I think a couple should team up and do everything together. That keeps the relationship alive and not so structured. I do not think it is that big of a deal for people to portray them that way, because as previously stated, women are still portrayed as the ones who MUST clean and have dinner ready and clothes layed out, etc.

The schools in our area have just started "home economics" classes again, due to this. While I was in charge of 25 four plex condos in Vegas, we had a lot of college students coming in. They shared housing and I was called in more then not, to teach them how to light and run the electric starting ovens, the garbage disposers, etc.
Of all my friend, only one or two can actually survive when they're wives have to leave for a day or two without going to a restaurant.
Most don't know how to wash clothes. This is so sad.

Its just humour. If every other groups wouldnt piss and moan everytime they get laughed at then we could all get laughed at together and everyone would be happy.
We are disciminated against sometimes though-all groups are. No, we dont get it as bad, but it does happen. There is a difference between a joke and discimination though.

l personally don't like any commercial that makes anyone look stupid. the advertisers must feel that the type you are referring to will make the woman feel good and will purchase their product. l'm glad l don't have to write this paper. Good Luck.
