they called it the new world becasue the thing is that when they reached here it was filled with new kind of land which suprised them and they "thought " no one was living here, so witht he fact that they saw this place they were proudly to name in New Land which in fact showed the possiblity of NEW things in this wonderful land

Europeans did not realize that North and South America and the Pacific stood between Europe and the Orient. When they realized their mistake, they concluded they had found a New World (the Old World being Europe).
