This question has been asked before and has a good answer (see ref 1). The most common element is iron.
If you want to know the most common element in the earth's crust, it is oxygen (see Ref 2).
The wikipedia has a nice list of the ten most common elements in the galaxy (at least if you ignore dark matter). See ref 3.

It is Oxygen, the most abundant element in the earth. Although, hydrogen is found in water but oxygen is found in water too. but oxygen is found also in ores, oxides of metals, in the air as O2 that we breath and organic molecules, etc. you can check this site to verify: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abundance_of_the_chemical_elements

The 8 most common elements in Earth’s crust (by mass):
46.6% Oxygen (O)
27.7% Silicon (Si)
8.1% Aluminum (Al)
5.0% Iron (Fe)
3.6% Calcium (Ca)
2.8% Sodium (Na)
2.6% Potassium (K)
2.1% Magnesium (Mg)
Taken from- http://www.windows.ucar.edu/tour/link=/earth/geology/crust_elements.html
The Earth's atmosphere roughly contains, by volume,
78% Nitrogen (N2)
21% Oxygen (O2)
Approximately 4% - 0.5% Water vapor (depending on relative humidity)
0.93% Argon (Ar)
0.038% Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
18.2 parts per million (ppm) Neon (Ne)
5.2 ppm Helium (He)
less than 3 ppm other miscellaneous gases, such as Methane, Krypton, Hydrogen, Nitrous oxide, Xenon, and Ozone..
