I have Mercedes 190E, 2.6 (year 1991)..Car heats up, when I turn on the AC. The gauge goes 100 and beyond. When I turn off the AC, it goes down to 80. The AC seems to be cooling off, but not enough. Of course, the weather in Omaha is quite hot right now.
What could be the problem? The cost of repair is so high, I will appreciate any tip, guidance, advice to fix it cheaply. I can be at least prepared to talk to the mechanic, who should not be able to fool me.
Thanks guys. Have a great day.
Poor Merc owner.

sounds like the switch/control to the secondary fan is defective one fan is suppose to turn on when the a/c is turned on- right side on most mb's try going to the library and get on the net there and go to allldata.com its-- free thru the lib you can go to the site but it will cost and some cars alldata is not very good on so check it out first if you want a quick test start the car w/ the hood up see if the fans are turning on turn on the a/c and see if one of the fans turns on and wait until it heats up fans should be on by the time it hits 100 (212f) if they arent one of the switches/relays are bad or the motors are burnt out-- it they do you have a cooling system problem --- Engine off key in pocket check to see if the belt is tight good luck go huskers

The first answer is good. It looks like you have an air flow problem. First, is your a/c fan working - if both fans are working (the one on the drivers side is for the water temp and the one on the passenger side is for the a/c - then check your condenser - it is the radiator looking thing in front of the radiator and see if it is dirty or that the fins are bent - if it is dirty clean it and only spray water on it in the direction of the fins and do not spray hard enough to bend the fins - If all of this is well you may have a weak radiator cap and it may need to be replaced. good luck.

If that's the original radiator it's way past it's normal lifespan. It can probably barely do the job when the AC is off.
