A .dat file will not open with any media player as .dat is a text file which is used by programs and not an "Audio / Video File. You may get a clue as to which program to open it with by "Right" clicking and selecting "Properties". If not, you will have to ask your friend which program he got the .dat file from. You will only be able to open that .dat file in the originating program.

if its a video download a video convertor and convert it to s file type wmp11 can play like avi or wmv

rename it to other with this following .mpeg (dot mpeg) then try to play or its corrupted your friend must resend it
