Oxidation to carbonyl compounds and carboxylic acids:

Add 5 drops of ethanol to 10 drops of sulphuric acid. Now add 2 drops of potassium dichromate solution and warm
1. What' is the smell and color changes ?
2.The reason for the color change?
3.Why is sulphuric acid added to the reaction mixture?
4.State the oxdising agent and the final product of oxidation

1. Apple smell, which is actually ethanal. Orange to green.
2. The ethanol reduces Cr-VI to Cr-III
3. All oxidising agents with oxygen to get rid of need H+ ions in order to make water.
4. (Cr2O7)2- is the oxidising agent, and CH3CHO is the initial oxidation product. Under certain conditions CH3COOH can be produced by further oxidation.
