no one really knows what the M stands for.
some claim it means the Mother of all theories
I believe Einstein was the one that came up with the idea and was searching for a conclusion to this theory.

Its and idea or equation that could unify fission, fusion, gravity and electromagnetism into one equation that could explain all 4.

he had no luck, until just a few years ago when scientist applied what they call string theory and its math to the 4.

string theory says that all parts of atoms are made up of strings of energy that shift through 11 dimensions.

so far, its been successfully, the math works, but its hard to prove multidimensions especially when we can't see or touch Ds 5-11

and explination of the all the dimensions.

once you've got all that down get ready for this one.

11 dimensional string theory, (and 26 dimensional M theory), has not produced anything.

It is possible that the extra 7 dimensions of space in string theory, (that are not perceived), are mathematical deception that first appeared with 5 dimensional Kaluza-Klein Theory.

String theory is possibly deception involving adding dimensions of space to the already existing 3 dimensions of space one dimension at a time at 90 degree angles to the previous dimension.

That string theory is possibly invalid is stated at the end of the wikipedia article on string theory.

The M in M-theory stands for magick, mystery,or matrix. It is part of string theory. Check out Brian Greene's Elegant Universe. It is too hard to discuss in this kind of forum.

I am actually reading The Elegant Universe right now. I suggest you buy it, it is a bit perplexing in parts but I think it describes M Theory well.

basically it deals with muliple universes. it says there there are several (i think its either 10, 11, or 26 depending on the theory) universes and when they collide they cause massive shockwaves.
