christian bale kind of reinvented batman and made it his own, maybe heath ledger can do the same with the joker.

Jack Nichelson was not the original Joker. He played The Joker in Tim Burton's version of Batman, a version which - aside from a few main characters here and there - has almost nothing to do with Batman. It got even worse with Batman Returns, which was essentially a Batman movie in name only.
Everyone uses Jack Nichelson's version of The Joker as the definitive one, when even it wasn't really very good. He wasn't the Joker. He was Jack Nichelson with some make-up and hair color. He acted a little crazy. He killed a few people. But he wasn't the Joker. Not by a long shot.
Cesar Romero was laughable as The Joker in the 60's TV show, but, then again, he was supposed to be. The Joker couldn't be the homicidal nut that he is in a show aimed primarily at kids. The "Ha's" became "hoo's" and we had a pastel-adorned clown pretending to be The Joker. Faithful to the comics at the time...which were dumbed down to fit the TV show. It wasn't until Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams came together in the early 70's that someone decided to actually take Batman seriously.
And yes...I'm going somewhere with this.
While we don't know for certain, it can be assumed fairly that the origin of The Joker has been reimagined for this movie. Of course, it must have been...since The Joker doesn't have a definitive origin. Most involve some version of the Red Hood story, but all can be refuted one way or another. With The Dark Knight, it appears that they will be focusing more on the now than the then. They won't deal so much with how he became The Joker as they will deal with what he does as The Joker. This, I think, is definitely the best way to go.
As far as Ledger's performance goes, I think he has the acting ability to do it. And every single on-set reporter and actor has had nothing but good and exciting things to say about his performance.
He has Chris Nolan directing him, and a very capable writer in Jonathan Nolan. I can't wait for the final product, and I absolutely can't wait to see more of Ledger's Joker.
I don't think I will ever see The Joker on screen. I will see many different interpretations, but none of them will ever be The Joker. That said, I do believe that Ledger's interpretation might be the closest to the true spirit of the character, and that I'm very much looking forward to.

I understand that this is a new series of Batman movies. But Jack Nicholson is the Joker and anyone playing that character won't measure up. Nothing against Heath Ledger its just a bad choice to bring the Joker back.

it'll be hard filling the shoes of Jack Nicholson (joker in the first batman),but i'm already a fan the the whole Batman series and the re-telling of the story with Christian Bale only makes the series better. cant really judge till i see the end product.

I don't know... Time will tell... After Batman & Robin, I'd given up on the franchise... But Batman Begins was amazing, and Christian Bale was far better than I thought he would be, so I'm going to give Heath the benefit of the doubt...

I would have preferred Adrien Brody as The Joker.
He has a very thin face, high cheek bones, and long nose that looks like the Joker in the comics especially the Brain Bolland graphic novel "The Killing Joke"

No heath ledger would not make a good joker. He doesnt have the characteristics of a good joker (long face, sharp features) We don't need any more gay cowboys playing key roles in movies that should be good.

Potentially, the new movie may be the best of them all and will kick some life into the stalled franchise. He will do a great job.
