Would you still hate the Yankees if they didn't have all the championships or would they just be another team to you? There are front runners that jump on the band wagon, but every team has that. For some reason I saw a lot more Boston fans coming out of the wood works after 2004. Yankee fans went through the 80s and early 90s with BAD baseball, forget about championships, watching well played games was a rarity until '94. I like the Yankees because they play the game right, and they have tradition.

I would watch them no matter what. Since the days of Donnie Baseball, I was a fan. Even if the Yankees go 0-162 (Which will never happen), I will still be a fan. I was a Jets fan when the Jets were 1-15 in 1996, and I am still a Knicks fan even though the Knicks haven't had a winning season since 2000-2001. The Yankees are no different.

The problem is that most "fans" have only been fans since 1995 or 1996. That goes for the majority of people here in Yahoo answers.
They've only tasted success, and had never really had to live through difficult seasons and losing efforts. I'm sure there are many loyal fans in here, too, but it's obvious that most fans are "new", or since they started this incredible run of money, power, and success.
For example, yesterday someone asked who the greatest Yankee of all time was, and somebody answered Derek Jeter, somebody else Don Mattingly. I almost fell off my chair reading those answers; obviously they have no clue of the Yankee past other than the 26 championships they bring up on every single question and answer...

This is something that i have thought of my whole life...now i grew up in New York now this is something you have to pick do i like the Yankees or the Mets and well this is the exact reason why i like the Mets its because except for some of these die hard fans in new york or new jersey or anyone whos been with em' since the start those are the true fans i cant tell you how many 12 year old kids there are that just pick up on the yankees and act like there a die hard fan because thats total bs and i dont want to hear it same thing goes with the chargers in football so many people just picked up on the chargers bandwagon in the last couple years and they say there a charger fan same with the saints and the patriots...its just total bs

Yankee fans are no worse than any other fans. We are accustomed to winning and when don't we are hard on the team. I've been a Yankee fan since i can remember. I was a Yankees fan in the early 90's when it was embarrassing to admit it. We suffered and now we're happy about our team. I bet if your team won four out of six World Series, you'd be crazy when they don't make it out of the first round. We are more kwonledgeable about good baseball then you would think. Don't listen to so called experts e.i. sports talk show hosts!! Let us be excited like you're excited about your team!! I'm sure Cub fans would love to have our record in the World Series, and they are more diehard fans than we are!! And ScubaSteve(great Screen Name by the way) is right about the sudden emergence of NY based RedSox fans.

Absolutely. My whole moms side of the family is from the Bronx, I live 30 minutes out of the city, and my cousin plays for the Jets. We wear our Yankee fitted's with pride, not because of the wins over the years, but because of the pride and professionalism most players take out on the field with them every day. We get emotional about every play and its hard to be a fair weather fan when your part of arguably the most dynamic rivalry in sports.
Here the fans are real. We know the prospects in the minors, we know the stats, we know the history, we respect the tradition. Here in NY, the Yankee fans are just that, fanatical. It hard to be just a fair-weather fan with a team thats so polarizing.

Unrequited love is for children. New Yorkers don't mind spending a lot of money for an excellent product however they do mind spend a lot of money for an inferior product and they won't. Both the Yankee's and the Met's know that they are in the most competive market in America for disposable income and if they put an inferior team on the field Mr& Mrs Joe fan will spend their money elsewhere -like a Broadway play
The net result is positive because it directly connects making money to winning championships unlike those poor Cub fans who despite a century of loyalty have nothing to show for it because the Cubs have no economic incentive to win.

yankee fans do have the most bandwagon/fair weather fans.
probably 30-40% of the baseball fans will call themself "yankee fans". and a huge portion of that group would jump on the devil rays if they were winning...because hey! everyone wants to be a winner.
but of course, there will be some new yorkers, or just some die hard fans who will pack the stadium.
being a true fan is sticking with a team through up & down. unfortunately, yankees dont get many downs.

Some are but alot of them aren't real fans they just say they like the yankees because the yankees are 1 of the most well known teams because of all the world series they have one, but i think how test the fan if they are real is have thme name the player for each postition on the Yanks.

your team that you root for is your team--period. Other non-contending teams have die hard fans. Cubs,Red Sox (before '04),Twins are just a few to name that have a loyal fan base w/o winning a WS for an extended period of time. Why should Yankees fans be any different. We still followed and rooted for them in the late 80's-early 90's when they were really bad.
