Short, tighter fitting/slim dresses are in this year. So do NOT go with the typical ball gown that no one can even see you dance in.
Hottest, classy dresses and accessories are usually found at Windsor. But you might want to check online more around Prom/Homecoming season.
Best tip I can give you is to go dress shopping even if Homecoming/Prom is many months away. Because all the formal dresses are marked down so cheap! But only when it's not Dress season!

Do you ever watch what the actresses wear when they walk the red carpet? The ones who look fabulous are the ones who go old school Hollywood glamour. When choosing your dress, think "less is more" as in less ornamentation (sequins, bows, ruffles, etc.) You want to show some skin without crossing the line into trashy. Think Nicole Kidman instead of Cher.

Wear a mid length, block colour dress in a colour that compliments you. I think red look snice on most people, unless you are really pale or have very light or light ginger hair. But you can't go wrong with black.
