There is some love there, but we are just gently scratching the surface of the other person we love. A true love and pairing of lovers is not a physical love, but deep, trusting and intuitive. We can embrace without touching, love without knowing and smash through all the rules of conventional society and what it tells us to be. The lovers in this painting are both hostages of their circumstances, but they could kiss, even from across the room.

The Lovers Painting

When pressed about the meaning of his paintings, Magritte often defined himself as a surrealist and insisted that trying to understand his work in a rational way was missing the point.

From Wikipedia:
René Magritte described his paintings by saying,

My painting is visible images which conceal nothing; they evoke mystery and, indeed, when one sees one of my pictures, one asks oneself this simple question, 'What does that mean?'. It does not mean anything, because mystery means nothing either, it is unknowable.

Of course, this does not invalidate the other responses here. It could easily be argued that Magritte's intention of having no rational subtext does not guarantee that none exists, or that it is impossible for human creations in general to be truly irrational. But in any case, the possibility of no interpretation at all should not be overlooked.

i agree that it's probably a variation on the 'love is blind' concept. love does sometimes veil our senses and our reason. it might also be that magritte just thought it was an interesting look and that any interpretation is ours, not his.

It looks like reciprocal anonymity, a shallow one night-er with no concern for identities, a fling or something. In anxious self estranged numbness, they are buffered from passions sensations, the birth of love aborted. Life sucks sometimes.

The Will is positive, the Judgment is negative.

That's an amazing and insane piece of art work right there.
Love is blind, but appearance is seen.
