If you move around a lot, that is, use your computer in different places, then more than likely the order of your preferred networks has been changed.

Right-click on the network icon in your taskbar. Select, View Available Wireless Networks. In the left-hand pane, Select, Change the order of preferred networks. Move your preferred network (of the moment) back up to the top position.

Even if you View Available Networks, if you can see your preferred network there (make a note of the signal strength).
There may be a stronger signal which your system prefers, but if you click again on your preferred network and Connect, it is re-instated as Preferred.

couple possibilities

1) the wireless beacon is turned off in your control panel
2) the wireless is set wrong
either not enabled
set to b only and you have g
try g or mixed networks

3) router is shielded by metal
usual range is 300 feet indoors 1000 outdoors
router should be high and not shielded
one idiot i knew ( kirk) had the router in a furnace room , surrounded by metal - heating ducts , furnace, water heater, full metal filing cabinets and under a heavy metal desk on the floor . That kirk was a buffoon
4) change the channel
your router's signal may be blended in with a neighbour;s signal . They can come in out of the blue long distances
go into the control panel and change the channel from the default channel 6 to channels 1 or 11. You can use any of the remaining 12 channels but these are first picks

99 % of wireless router problems are cured by changing the channel

also change the ssid from the defaults if you have not done so as well

if you have problems reset the router with the reset button on the back of the router
ensure if you have dsl that you have your isp log on info available or phone, cable broadband needs no such info and is straighforward

if your friends computer is in the same path as the wireless router it can prevent your computer from being detected on the wireless network. make sure the wi-fi router is in a centralized location. try adding in the MAC address of the router to the profile
