Too general to really answer. The first problem is, was there a contract? To have a contract, you need at least two "parties," something called consideration, and no issues of competence, fraud or compulsion. Then there is the problem of proving there was a violation of the contract, or a reason for the contract being voidable or unenforceable or not completed according to its terms. The parties, their lawyers or representatives, mediators (if you go that route), a judge or jury (if a civil trial) and any witnesses to prove any of the above will be involved. It will take as long as it takes to resolve. A civil trial may be the longest. Arbitration or mediation may be the quickest. Except for just reaching an agreement between the parties.
