Set up some algebraic equations, then solve. Let x be the smaller number and y be the larger number. Since x is 4 less than y, x + 4 =y. Now, just read straight through the word problem and convert it to equations. 10 times the smaller number minus 3 times the larger number is 51 is the same thing as saying 10*x - 3*y = 51. Now, replace y with (x+4). 10*x - 3*(x+4) = 51. Use the distributive property: 10*x - (3*x + 12) = 51. 10*x - 3*x -12 = 51. Group x and solve: 7*x - 12 = 51 7*x = 63 x = 9 Now, you know that y is 4 more than x. 9+4 is 13. So your two numbers are 9 and 13.

x, x-3 are the two numbers.
10(x-3)-3x = 33 =>7x = 63 => x = 9, x-3 = 6

Let's call the two numbers A and B...

We know that A+3=B

And that 10A - 3B =33

So this can solved by "substitution"...

If 10A - 3B =33

then 10A - [(A+3) + (A +3) + (A + 3)] = 33

so 10A - 3A -9 = 33, or 7A-9=33 or 7A =42,

so A = 42/7 = 6

Since A+ 3=B, B =9

take the problem step by step
I will use x for the 1st # and x-3 for the 2nd

x,
x-3

10(x-3)-3x=33

10x-30-3x=33

10x-3x=30+33

7x=63

x=9 x-3=6
1st#=9 and 2nd #=6
check:
10(9-3)-3(9)=33

10(6)-27=33

60-27=33

33=33

x+3=y
10x-3y=33
10x-3(x+3)=33
10x-3x-9=33
7x=42
x=6 & Y=9

1st equation: x = y - 3
2nd equation: 10x - 3y = 33

10x - 3y = 33
10 (y - 3) - 3y = 33
10y - 30 - 3y = 33
10y - 3y = 33 + 30
7y = 63
y = 9

x = y - 3
x = 9 - 3
x = 6

x = 6
y = 9

hope i helped. :)

let no. 1=x
let no. 2=y
x-y=3
x=y+3
10y-3x=33
10y-3(y+3)=33
10y-3y-9=33
7y=42
y=6
x=y+3
x=6+3
x=9.
