Well let me tell you a bit of what all three are like.
Phropocies
-The longest story quest
-The slowest leveling
-No exclusive classes
-No special PVP
-European themed
Factions (I don't own this one)
-The most PvP options
-The Assassin and Ritualist
-Levels faster than Phropocies
-Asian themed
-I've heard PvP is the best of the series
Nightfall
-Heroes minions
-Very fast leveling
-New way to do enchantments
-The Dervish and Paragon
-I've heard the PvE quests are better than Faction's
-Egyptian themed

Well, you need the original first to play the 2nd which is factions, and you need the 2nd (factions) to play Nightfall. So if its your first time playing get the first Guild Wars game. Can just start from 2nd or 3rd.

Guild Wars is being developed by ArenaNet, a subsidiary of NCsoft. Rather than have a continuous beta ArenaNet hold Beta weekends, where pre-ordered players and invited friends are allowed to test the game. This weekend was one such event and I was lucky enough to be invited along.

It doesn't matter. Each are stand alone games. Personally, I'd get the original.
