Yes, I think you're right. Everyone these days wants to be special and noticed. MySpace, FaceBook, blogs, and many of the personal websites feature people who are desperately trying to feel important. You can tell which ones are just trying to share information or simply sharing info with extended family and friends from the ones who are "displaying" themselves and their opinions in an effort to appear worldly, witty, intelligent, or whatever.
The content of the latter category is generally filled with "against the norm" material of all kinds. (Just think of some of the uploads to YouTube.)
The efforts of 'against the norm just to be against the norm' crowd renders them ineffective, which is unfortunate for those people who are truly innovative and unique.

oh yeah initially it seems different but not really admired then it becomes all the rage and then so old and tired Form instance low jeans showing ones slightly protruding abdomen or low cut shirts for females showing the required cleavage or having the newest hairdo. It's so unimaginative.
