I mean, we, the conservatives are the new generation of political power and on campuses across the nation we are gaining strength. That is why the old guard is fighting so hard and so dirty to keep hold of their power. What are your thoughts? Oh, btw, to the person who said I ask a lot of questions - that is ok. Isn't that what this forum is for?

OK, I'm a conservative Republican, let me say that up front, but obviously a bit older than you, as I remember the hippies in the'60's. That said, you sound incredibly arrogant and foolish. The "old guard" that you describe probably has a lot of bad ideas, but the movement developed for a reason, and to ignore that and act like some kind of power trip is going to win out is actually quite dangerous. You can't stamp out dissent by using more power. You actually can only win by winning over the hearts and minds of the people. (The same thing that would be necessary to win in Iraq, by the way).
You need to take a step back and rethink what it really means to be conservative, and READ some history and some economics and some political science, because you're going to be licking your wounds very soon. Talk radio is great, but it doesn't give you any real substance.

More importantly, if the "new conservatives" are in such a dominant position, why do you think we lost in the 2006 election? You clearly have given this no thought at all. This kind of arrogance is destroying our party. We need to reevaluate our positions and discover if we're truly being loyal to the conservative position, or if we're just being loyal to the party. Most of the older conservatives are convinced that the party has strayed FAR from what it really means to be conservative, and that departure is hurting us. Yet most of the young "new conservatives" are ignoring history and following mindlessly. The arrogance of our party is going to lose us another election if we're not careful. And this loss will be WAY more costly than the last one. I'm not looking forward to President Hillary, but when I hear someone talk like you, I can see that as a very likely possibility.

You have no idea what a hippie was. They were anti-establishment and anti-war. They were not democrats. Most were too young to vote. The age was 21 then. They likely had everything to do with Nixon becoming president because he said he would end the war and that was the first election they could vote in.

There is no such thing as an outdated political idea. The country is founded in basic ideals. That should never change. The issues change, but not the ideals. The younger generations often change things more than the old ones. Be careful what you wish for.

i've got widely used a pair previous hippies. They saved authentic to their roots, yet all of the drugs fried 'em. Now they are spacey weirdos. exciting characters and worth putting with on occasion, yet no one you may want to emulate. a brilliant variety of the hippies that did not bypass down the drug course became into yuppies interior the 80's. It became constantly in basic terms a fashion style for them. do not overly romanticise the Nineteen Sixties. Yeah, there became a brilliant variety of positives there yet there became a intense darkish element to boot. examine some Hunter Thompson. And earlier you lament the political inactivity of at present's toddlers, you're able to comprehend 2 issues. First, there became a draft interior the Nineteen Sixties. human beings have been energetic simply by fact they have been given despatched to Vietnam in the event that they weren't. there became a sturdy element of self-renovation at the back of the conflict protests. And 2nd, the device has adapted to the 60's strategies. precise to loose assembly? long gone. See ya in a "loose speech zone". "the guy" has so lots greater potential than he had lower back then; mass protests needless to say do not paintings any further. human beings nonetheless attempt, however. that's not total apathy any further, after 8 years of bush. a brilliant variety of youngsters worked not ordinary to get Obama elected. look what that have been given 'em--greater conflict, greater torture, super handouts to the banks, and so on... The device has adapted. Apathy seems to be the logical reaction. The Nineteen Sixties have been nonetheless a desirable time and worth examining. i'm involved in examining the different responses to this, incredibly if all and multiple from that era is in this platform.

Old hippies do not neccessarily denote dead political philosophy. Hippies embraced an extreme form of liberalism which thoughtful people who call themselves moderates, liberals, or progressives do not always agree with. Liberal;ism vs conservatism is an age old conflict. It will not be resolved in your lifetime as political winds swing back and forth. If Americans could take the best from both philosophies, we would be truly a great nation. Unfortunately we swing widely back and forth when we get tired of the popular ideas of the time. We are swinging towards liberalism because Americans want more regulation witness healh insurance issues, recent toy crisis, mining disasters. When Americans feel that government is getting too big we swing back to conservatism. Open your eyes to all arguments. Read the left and the right and chart a moderate middle embracing both. Neither one of these political movements will ever die. Read your history and see. Don't be surprised if we get a Democratic president next time. Why do you thing congress went Democratic? It all balances out. The conservative sees Iraq as a protection agaionst terrorism, the liberal as a humanitarian horror which must be brought under control like the Vietnam war. The truth my friend lies between the two. Read Learn, and find your middle.

I'm an old hippie, and I can assure you that the current generation of college students are a long way from assuming power. Eight Presidents in a row were WWII veterans, beginning with Eisenhower and ending (hopefully) with Bush the Elder. My generation has had two, and we're the baby boomers, so roughly six Presidents from now, you'll have your turn. What's more, I've been living in campus communities since 1985, and the only conservatives I've seen are sitting at a little booth, wearing ties and trying to sign up Goths and skateboarders...

Hippies were a label that was dawned on a generation to discredit them and their opinions. Well it seems that what goes down comes around and here we go again. Conservatives are fine as long as they get money and really don't go out of their way to change anything because there is no money in it for them. Human crisis doesn't mean much to them because it is not profitable cause. It would be so unfortunate if what you say is true because we would all be up the creek without a paddle. These hippies as you call them run companies and gave up the peace beads years ago so don't underestimate what you don't understand.

I think you need to be specific when you say "outdated political ideas". Some 60's ideas are outdated, some are not. One popular 60's idea was that all people, even people of color, should be able to vote. Moreover, all people should be able to use the same bathrooms, drink from the same water fountains, sit anywhere they want on the bus, etc. Is this an outed dated idea? Should we be puttin' them darkies back where they belong? After all, you, the conservatives, are rather uncomfortable around non-whites and would rather not have to deal with them at all, right?

There are other 60's "ideas" that are still relevant as well. So please be specific with your next question...

There were many so-called "hippies" who grew out that imbecilic state of mind or simply O.D'd before they could. They realized that at some point, you have to get a job and support yourself and your family, and leave worrying about the "man" to some other group.
What's silly is when people like Ward Churchill can't seem to let go of 1969. He tries to be shocking, and relevant, but basically comes off as a complete and utter loser. Nothing more than a perfect symbol of a largely bankrupt generation.

most of us old hippies turned conservative long ago when we saw that our misguided idealism was not so ideal after all, and that socialism can't/won't cure the world's issues and that our congress and politcians would indeed lie to us.

but like the other poster pointed out we paved the way for a lot of good social changes so don't negates us completely or you will be the one who looks silly.

Yeah, I guess having an administration that actually cares about it's people is silly.
If you think the conservatives are the new generation of political power, I'm guessing you just came out of a coma. The current admin. has destroyed most of the trust in our government.
And yes, it's ok to ask as many question as you want to ask.
