considering the way they got to be talented was their sense of hearing,

is that ironic, or just kind of sad?

Not many musicians go deaf from performance of music. Many entertainers may go deaf from the 2 billion watt speakers required to make their pathetic drivel seem important.

But there is poetic justice in it all. Many such "entertainers" can't carry a tune in a bushel basket, so if their subsequent squealing is even more out of tune, whose going to notice?

I don't know if its really irony, since it is a given that prolonged exposure to high decibels will ruin anyones hearing. So if you
choose one Particular mode of expresssion, as opposed to
another. It is just THE DEAL, but should not be a surprise.

Hearing is not a necessity to making music.
True talent can over that obstacle.
Beethoven was deaf, yet look at his musical achievements.

Yes it is but true. Same for auto racing. I know my loss of hearing is from my racing days back in the 60's and 70's because no one wore ear protection.

Not so much ironic as highly predictable. And it's not just musicians - it's clubbers and boombox junkies too.
