I'm trying to download limewire onto my Mac. The only problem is, it requires Java 1.5 or later to run. The pop-up that informed me of this said that upgradinbg to a later version of OS X could solve this problem. But, how do I do that? Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in adavance to whoever anwers.

There are earlier versions of Limewire for OSX 10.2
10.3 and 10.4 the problem is when you go to there site you are probably only offered the latest version.
The only place you might be able to find it is.

Installing a newer version of Mac OS doesn't depend on what version is already installed. If this PowerBook is 867MHz or faster processor, and has enough RAM and available hard drive space, you can install Leopard (10.5.x). If it falls short of that, you can still install Tiger (10.4.x). Either way, you need to buy an install DVD, because they are "reference releases", like going from Windows 98 to XP or going from XP to Vista -- gotta pay. A very few shops will have a Tiger install DVD for sale. In fact, there were some Tiger 4-CD sets for computers that didn't have a DVD drive, but they are really rare. Here are the minimum requirements for each: Tiger (OS 10.4): * A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor * Built-in FireWire * At least 256 MB of RAM * DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation * At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools Leopard (OS 10.5): * Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor * 512MB of memory * DVD drive for installation * 9GB of available disk space * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply. * Some features require Apple's MobileMe service; fees apply. Even if you have a PB with 800MHz processor, it is possible to fool the installer into thinking it is an 867MHz processor by installing "LeopardAssist" first, see the link below. Folks who have done this report good performance. After all, how much difference is there between 800 and 867MHz performance?

1. Run Software Update in the Apple menu. Download and install the COMBO update if you are behind a couple updates.
2. Buy and Upgrade disk and install it. Back up your data before installing.
3. Look for an older version of Limewire and use that.

You didn't specify what version of MacOs X you are using. Just run the software update. One of the update items is a newer version of Java. Run the update program several times if you haven't done it recently. You can also go to the Apple support pages and see what versions of Java they have. Lastly, if you need MacOs 10.4 and are running 10.1 or something similar, you'll have to buy it. You can get versions on eBay, especially with the newer 10.5 coming out in about 6 weeks.

Apple Menu > Software Update

If you are running Mac OS X 10.2 or 10.3, go to an Apple Store or the online Apple store and buy Mac OS X 10.4 ($129) But try Software Update first...
