My Molly just had about 100 babies. She started 3 days ago and had a few a day until today when she had over 80 (yes we counted as we scooped them out int the other side of the divided tank). Should we leave her in her side of the divided tan (she has about 2 gallons of the 10 gallon tank)? Should we put her in a 5 gallon bucket for a while, or return her to the 55 gallon tank? And how long should we wait to move her or keep her there? By the way, we now have over 150 baby Mollies from 2 fish. Are these amounts normal? Thanks

I am not pulling anybodys' leg. We counted 87 live babies today as we scooped them up individually to be put in the other side of the tank. There was about 10 - 20 the 2 prior days and 6 that did not live. She was HUGE. We thought she was going to give birth 2 weeks ago.

Well, let me say I am very jealous. I've never had a fish have that many babies!! Our platy gave us about 4-6 little ones so far in our 75 gallon tank!!

If your tank is well planted (either live or artificial plants), you can probably leave Mom with them. The babies can hide in the plants. If you think she's not going to pop out anymore babies, and after that many I doubt she will, then put her back into the 55 gallon.

I've never heard of a fish having that many babies. Are you pulling our legs??

Mollies under the right conditions can reproduce quite quickly. A female can hold fertilized eggs for as long as 3-6 months waiting for the right conditions or have in a sense multiple pregnancies in that they develop some of the eggs birth then repeat until they are out of fertilized eggs. This is often why when a person has only one molly then they begin to produce fry even after having them for a few months.
If you wish to raise the fry they can stay with mom I have never had a mollie that ate her babies where as many other species will so if there are other fish in the tank then would be a good idea to seperate the fry until the have at the very least doubled in size. The older the mollie and the more pregnancies the larger the batches will be. It is a good practice to have a min ratio of 3 females to one male or he will completly stress the female out if you have a way to keep them seperated for a while do it.

All the fry need is hiding places such as plants or deco stuff that other fish can not get in. (if they are in a tank with other fish) they have fake spawning grass available at most fish stores that is awesome and then of course food. They eat algae as well as what ever you are feeding the other fish there is also a product called first bites that is a really fine powder that works great also.
Best of luck wth your new babes.

No, I wouldn't suggest it.. when I had my molly babies (60) I kept them in a breeding net for 2 reasons. 1- they would get eaten by the other mollies, 2- the filter would suck them up. Put them in a breeding net for right now, but after a couple weeks or a month, you need to put them in a proper tank, but it has to be different from the adult tank. You could use a bowl, or a big empty vase.

You can actually leave them all in the same tank. If you have the small gravel rocks on the bottom they will hide until they are big enough to not be eaten. If you have a filter that has a tube going down from the top of the tank then you should put a net over it (a womans knee high will work) to make sure they are not sucked up in the filter. Breeding grass is another great hiding place for the babies.Good luck

Put her back into the 55 gallon tank, and take the divider out of the 10 gallon, that way the babies have lots of space to swim and grow

Hope that helps
Good luck and congrats
