Or do you think it's one of those UNFORTUNATE events sometimes beyond our control? I'm in debt, & I became in debt as a result of Hurricane Katrina, trying to replace my losses. Many people bash me for being in debt & say I use Hurricane Katrina as an excuse. Well, many people lost homes, belongings, & jobs during that time.

Many circumstances change. One scenario is that a person can have a good, decent job & good credit but has credit cards & has a good boss, & then his boss gets promoted to a new job & then they hire a new boss, & the new boss doesn't like him & fires him. Then, no job for Max. Max eventually can't afford to pay his apartment rent & gets evicted & becomes homeless & jobless, & his debt gets worse.

***Why is life so difficult?

After the market crash in 1929, there was the great depression. A lot of those people (your grandparents generation maybe) were raised to not put things on credit, so they wouldn't get screwed again.

A lot of young people today have to go to in debt to improve themselves (college, trade school) or to get their first house (or rent for the rent of their lives).

I know I have a car debt and some college loans left. That's the way it is. As long as you're one of those people who are willing to work and can pay your monthly payments and don't overcharge their credit card, you can be financially responsible.

Let's say it takes 10 years for you to pay off your loan. By then you can direct your extra money for savings or 401k so you'll reduce the risk of debt in the future.

Oh no, it is not irresponsible to be in debt. I know many people who have had illnesses or family illnesses that caused them to be in debt. There was nothing they could do. Cancer is not something that cares about money - treatment is expensive and many people cannot continue to work. It is just something that happens.

I agree, sometimes it is the person's fault, but there are times when you have no control over it.
