www.whatis.com A fantastic site.
Or www.wikipedia.com.
Simply put:
Router - Networks Stuff
Modem - Provides the internet.
There's loads of devices that are both

Basically, a router gets the Internet then routes it to multiple computers.
Think of a router as something that gets the signal then shares it between computers. It also allows computers to talk to each other. You'll even find some printers can be networked up using a router.

It is a pc of hardware (or software) that connects networks. Each message (email what ever) has an address and the router uses that address to send the packet along to its destination. A router can keep a table of addresses to make it quicker. It uses the IP address to know if the address is on its network or another network. There is a good video that explains routers and packets at this address. http://www.warriorsofthe.net/
Watch the video its informative and cute. :-)
