I have a large island at my church. 35' x 6'. I'm putting down mulch, is there anything else i can do? the setup is difficult because its' filled with jasmine plants and rose bushes, but there is some empty space in there.

Try the weed block mesh (or trash bags) on the open areas. It will stop the weeds for a few years...

You could put Black plastic down under the mulch. Place it around the plants already established, then cover with mulch. Nothing is EVER weed free, but it will retard the weeds for a while. Also get some ROUND-UP and spray when you first see weeds popping thru. Just be careful and don't get any on the plants. It will kill them, for sure.

We use weed barrier (a THICK fibery cloth that can be purchased at Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) underneath the mulch, (make sure it is not plastic because it will rot away). You can also use Round-up (weed killer spray) as long as you do not get it near the roots of the plants. It kills everything.

Place newspaper in a thick lawyer water the newspaper till soaked, place mulch down on top of the newspapers, let this sit for a few weeks to kill off any weeds.

The only way I have found, is to dig them out as they appear, or cover the whole area with a thick cover of mulch.

I used Preen in the soil to prevent weeds from coming up its at your local garden supply store.

Gotta dig them out. Pour boiling water on them to kill em first.
