If the African countries spent less time buying arms and fighting each other, and got rid of their corrupt govornments then they would be able to feed themselves. All the time that the developed world keeps throwing money at the African states every time they are in trouble, then they will come to rely on the handouts and not help themselves.

Unfortunately Africa is full of people like Mugabe. Africa was subjected to 300 years or more of the slave - trade, it then suffered the colonisation of it's land by Europeans who seem to have brought nothing but grief to Africa and the people thereof.

When 'cobbling' together the map of Africa, and dividing it up into colonies, later to become nations; no consideration was taken of the natural tribal boundaries. Thus it was the case that some tribes were cut in half; some in one country the rest in a neighbouring country.

Bad things will continue to happen in Africa so long as the Western World, because of it's guilt about what it did in Africa, continues to pour in aid.

Africans do not need aid. Africans want jobs, work, employment and a means by which they can make a living.

One positive thing which has been happening and which may have gone un-noticed by some people, is the large influx of African workers coming into the UK and the EU. Most of these migrant workers send part of their earnings back home to their families in Africa. This is helping to boost the economy back home and at the same time boost the economy of their host nation, such as UK.

Keep working.

Something else which Africa has and which works very well, is large families. A large family is far better able to take care of it's elders than the state.

Stop worrying about Africa. I spent 38 years there an I can tell you from experience that it is a lost cause. It is a bottomless pit into which misguided people throw money.
Most countries in Africa have the climate and topsoil to produce an over abundance of food. The problem is that it requires work. Africans won't work without strong supervision. The best hope was South Africa but the world could not tolerate that. So you have a situation where a once great country is retrogressing under black African 'leadership' and I have no doubt that in the foreseeable future SA will be asking the global community for aid and blaming their situation on apartheid / racism / colonialism / the white man etc.
Let Africa perish. It is not worth the time of day!!

Plant food, it doesn' t take a genius to plant seeds. Find farm land plant food if Ethopia can't do it then find greener pastures. Find a way to send it to Ethopia they must have some embassy. Find some people or persons who can help maybe it could be exempt thru charitable causes. Get some money from Kerry's wife yeah thats the ticket

there is enough food in this world to feed everyone. sadly greed, corruption, power etc mean that most of africa's wealth belongs to a very small percentage while a large percentage live in utter poverty. I hate to be cynical over such a terrible problem but I don't believe that we can ever change this side of human nature with it's taste for power, or get rid of corruption. As far as I can see the world is only going further and further into it's problems.

I have a novel idea. How about if the people in countries like Ethiopia rise up and get rid of corrupt government officials who horde food and aid money for themselves. Then set up a capitalistic economy that competes in the global marketplace so their people can prosper. I know it will take many years but it happened in the USA. It can happen anywhere. But continuing to send billions upon billions of dollars to corrupt governments won't solve a damn thing.

Maybe something like the Geneva Convention, but dealing with basic human rights in the matter of living standards. All nations to sign up to it, with a crucial permission implicit in their ratification that, in the event that living standards failed to meet - or fell below - the agreed standard, the UN would be automatically empowered to impose a "corrective administration" within the borders of the affected nation.

(It's always soooo easy to sort out the world on paper, isn't it?)

Africa could feed itself just fine if only Africa would embrace capitalism and the rest of the world would cease interfering with world markets.

of course, neither America nor Europe can, politically speaking, cease interfering with world markets. On our end, we have to suck up to Iowa farmers so they'll elect our next President for the rest of us. Europe has the same problem with French and Danish farmers.

[sigh]

In case you haven't noticed, there isn't a single capitalist country on earth that has a food problem. Only tribal societies, dictatorships, theocracies, and socialist 'heavens' have food problems.

Some people just do not want want to cease trying to oppress and/or control their neighbors' behavior. Famine is one of the little clues that this does not work -- it has a tendency to cause the people to revolt against the government and the elite running things.

The best way would be to stop giving them any food. Let them figure out their own solutions to the problem. It's sad that there are Beggar Nations rising up in Africa, who know of no other way to feed their people. If you look at their armies and their politicians you'll see plenty of fat people.
