Protein skimmers are actually for saltwater aquariums but some people use them on freshwater tanks.I have a 135 gallon saltwater tank and a 55 gallon freshwater neither tank has a protein skimmer.I do not feel they are a needed thing as far as aquariums go plus they cost alot.

It absolutly cannot hurt. Anything to improve water quality is a plus as long as you can afford the item and can maintain it. Try freecycle and ask for one. Someone may have one lying around and may give you one...

You don't need one for a freshwater aquarium

they're ment for marine tanks
