In patella alta the kneecap rides too high up on the femur (thigh bone).

Patella baja is the opposite of patella alta - the kneecap rides too low down the femur.

Loosely translated it means lower, declined, or sunken ... I believe when it's used to describe Baja California or the Baja Desert in Mexico it refers to the lay of the land. I expect in both those places the land slopes toward the areas that carry the word in their titles.

In spanish, alta and baja cause refer to big and small, tall and short, or anything along the lines of that.

Alta means big, or tall, while baja means short or small.
