I lived a block or so away from the Staples Singers, back in the day. I always though that Mavis had a wonderful throaty
contralto, but I did not know that they were known outside of
Chicago. Imagine my surprise to be at a Kentuck Art Festival
and find her the featured performer, nearly 30 years later.
SWEET! Does anyone know if Pop Staples and her other sister are still alive. I ride with their music all the time.

Mavis was the lead singer of the enormously influential Staple Singers. The Staples brought gospel influence into the growing folk and protest movement of the sixtes, but had been around since the forties. A great singer and a wonderful lady. A folk hero.

Mavis Staples is a gospel/R&B/pop singer. She was the lead singer in the group "The Staple Singers", popular in the 1970's. The group also included her father. Their most popular record was "I'll take you there" with Mavis on lead vocals while her father accompanied on guitar.
