I have a pretty old computer that still works great for me. I installed an open source operating system on it, along with routing and firewall software, and now I use it as my own highly-configurable router.

That's not to say that you would need something like that, but you could certainly put it up on a site like http://craigslist.com for a reasonably low price and I'm sure someone in your area would love to have it.

yes bring it upto date... by installing Linux on it...

now here is what you don't know... install ubuntu linux on it and it will be faster than any windows XP or Vista, you can install Linux on a computer with 128 meg of ram,, and it will do anything Vista can do...

linux is free to download, you will get all the software you will ever need.. when you download linux you get 6 cd's with everything.. games cd burning/ripping. you will need at least a 10 gig hard drive to install it.... try it out for your own good here are links to linux downloads sites. unbuntu is the best to install and learn...

Hey,

Never scrap an old PC (as i have learnt). Always keep:
a) It's hardisks (you never know when you might need any of its files, or just a handy bit of extra space).
b) Take its CD-Rom/Floppy drive, you never know if anything will bung out in your new PC, CD-Roms are commonly known to drop out occasionally (especially samsung ones).

Not sure about anything else :))

Hope this helps,
Piet

So long as the machine isn't "too" out of date and still works reliably, I've given several PC's to young relatives.

* Donate it to Goodwill or the Salvation Army.
* Check your local listings for computer repair shops that give older computers to low income families.
* Strip it down to sell the parts on eBay - people are always looking for older computer parts.

Otherwise, donate it to someone or to a worthy charity/organization.

I've often toyed with the idea of putting perspex or glass sides on the case and turning it into a fish tank or plastic sides and using it to house pets... ETC: lizards, spiders, mice or rats.
