Are they truely automatic (do the tail lights also come on) because they maybe daytime running lights which on most cars can't be shut off by a switch (other than setting the e-brake) otherwise look for a dial much like a dash dimmer switch and see what that dose.

Look at the knob/switch. You will see a setting to the far left, usually.
This is the automatic setting. This automatically turns off the lights when the engine is stopped with a delay of a few seconds or a minute.
Look to the middle or right, you'll see a manual setting.

Can you say, "Operating Manual"? Did you not get one with the car?

It is possable that you have an owners hand book. I could tell you the Head light knob has two settings one auto and the other manual. Like my GTP and MY GTO but I cannot say exactly for sure. Auto Lights are nice pulling out onto the street at dusk the lights are on. Go to manual and dusk you pull out and the traffic cop give you a ticket.

If you have automatic headlights then you have a light sensor on the dash close to the defroster vent. The only way to turn these off at night is to shut the engine off.

Your headlight switch should have a notch for automatic or manual. Just turn the switch or lever to the appropiate position

pull the E brake make it click 1 time - that shuts off most daytime running lights.

Genarally the only way to do it is to turn the car off, apply the parking/emergency brake, and then re-start the car.

THESE ARE DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS AND THEY ARE THERE FOR SAFETY REASON, THEY CANNOT BE BY-PASSED BUT YOU CAN TRY AND REMOVE THE DAYTIME RUNNING LAMP MODULE ASSEMBLY AND SEE IF ALL THE REST OF THE LIGHTS WORK ONCE IT IS REMOVED.

BEST OF LUCK
