Hip Hop music is a genre of lyrical music or rapping combined with a funky beat. This was "born" in New York City in the 1970's.

In the beginning it was derived from the African-American culture to tell stories of their trial and tribulations as well as hope and faith, now it has morphed into something else.

While I still appreciate this style of music, I think it has lost its true roots and is a little hard for me to listen to, lyrically at least.

Salt 'n Peppa, Run DMC, Grand Master Funk and the starter of it all The Sugar Hill Gang were pioneers into taking a negative and turning it into a positive story. The hip-hoppers of today are about excess and what they can get, not what they can do to get it.

Ah, how I long for yesterday.

Hip Hop music is supposed to be music that is in the now and music that can start a movement of some sorts (hop). Everyone that raps or mc's is not hip hop. Any artist that stays the same is not hip hop. We have Hip Hop Artist and we have Rappers. Hip Hop is poetic and changing. Rapp is rhyming over music.
This is just my opinion.

Hi there I was watching a hip hop documentary in which a famous person (forgot know) said hip hop music can be explained as the following -HIP meaning something that is modern and now and HOP- being an movement. However I believe this meaning was applied when hip hop was in the 70's/80's and eary 90's- Hip hop today I beleive doesnt represent this.

Hip hop music is a style of popular music. It is composed of two main elements: rapping (also known as MC'ing) and DJing; along with breakdancing and graffiti, these are the four components of hip hop, a cultural movement which began among African Americans and Latinos in New York City in the early 1970s. The term rap is sometimes used synonymously with hip hop music, though it is also used to refer specifically to the practice of rapping, which is just one component of hip hop.
