I'm only an average sewer but love it. Is curtain making a good business? Has any out there ever tried to make curtain making a business with success?

Hello, I agree with the others try and go part time first. Are family friend started making curtains part time things went so well she ended up with a shop that was always busy she employed two full time staff, the shop went for 14 years before she sold it on and then she did a part time mobile service just to keep herself busy but without the hassel of employing staff or over heads of a shop. GO FOR IT, and if you start out part time or even in your spare time (if you have any) then if things do not go to plan then you still have your job to fall back on. Best wishes hope it all works out for you.

I can't sew at all, however my mother has all her curtains made for her by the same lady.(takes the measured fabric to her home, then picks it up when ready) There are lots of places selling fabric these days( but no good if you can't make the curtains)- thats where your skills would come in handy). Perhaps keep practising your sewing so you have some examples to show prospective customers. The lady my mother uses gets her business word of mouth and a small advert in the local free paper. Another lady that makes my auntie's curtains has a mobile service- a van where she comes and measures up in the home and provides the fabric with a swatch book etc.

Many people need nets made or alterations- things like this may be good to start with.

Go for it! Approach local furnishing stores and ask to put up adverts or to be recommended to their customers, advertise in the local press. Set up a web site.

Write a business plan.

Why not start part-time ? That way you'll have income from your job as well.

Go for it.
