Bamboo plants are ideal as they are miniature and easy to be taken care of. Also they are pretty and green, a very nice indoor plant. Or you can try other small water plant as they don't need to fertilised so you can minimise health hazards. Erm, unhealthy? Maybe your friend meant they'll suck your oxygen supply at night but hey, come on, how much can a tiny plant absorb your oxygen supply? Most of the time, they provide oxygen and absorb extra carbon dioxide from us. So, overall, it's good to have some plants at home, indoor.

You probably want plants that live in low light and not require a lot of work.
Get a "Spider Plant" some call it an "Airplane Plant". It a hanging plant, does well indoors of in front of a window and not need a lot of water.
I get you a picture.

Momma is in the nest and the babies hang down;

Mine I just water a little every 3 days and I give away babies all the time. You not have to water so much water pour out everywhere. A shot glass a day works. Heck, last year I gave a friend that have a Plant Nursery 50 to raise and sell, They very pretty when they happy.

False, a plant in the bedroom works hard to clean the air, it does consume oxygen at night when its dark but the difference it can make will have no effect on health,

Start with something simple to keep. The lucky bamboo lives but never seems to grow too much, not a very exciting plant.

Never heard of such a thing. Plants are great for every room in your house, except maybe a babies room. They give off oxygen and help clean the air.

You must get a houseplant that can survive the temperature of your area if you go for extended periods of not conditioning the air. Your best bet would be to go to a local botanist for advice on the plants that suit your situation best.

I would get a jade plant if there is a nicely lit window in your room--it takes very little care and grows very slowly. We have an "heirloom" jade in my family, and it is upwards or thirty years old.
It is very simple, and can bloom very prettily.
