I'll do 2 of them just to give you a break. I have no
time left to do the rest. Sorry.
No. 3:
Find a rational and irrational number
between √2 and √5.
Rational number:
2 (=2/1) lies between these 2 numbers.
Why? Clearly 2 < 4 < 5.
Taking the positive square root of each member,
√2 < 2 < √5.
Irrational number.
You can find a number between any 2 numbers
by averaging them.
Claim: (√2 + √5)/2 is irrational.
Proof: It is enough to prove √2 + √5 is irrational.
Let x = √2 + √5. Then x² = 7 + 2√10.
Since √10 is irrational(10 isn't a square),
x² is irrational. Thus, so is x, because if x
were rational its square would also be rational.

12. Find a such 2y+3 is a factor of 2y³+9y²-y-a.
We can write
2y³+9y²-y-a = (2y+3)(y²+by+c).
We will find b and c, which will give us a also.
General rule:
If two polynomials in y are equal, the coefficients
of like powers of y are equal.
So let's equate the coefficients of y²:
3 + 2b = 9
and b = 3.
Thus
2y³+9y²-y-a = (2y+3)(y²+3y+c).
Now equate the coefficients of y
9+2c = -1
c = -5.
Finally
2y³+9y²-y-a = (2y+3)(y²+3y-5)
and thus a = 15.
Answer: a = 15.
Hope that helps. Now sit down and do the
rest of them. These were the 2 hardest ones IMHO!
