I have nearly all my music ripped as mp3 files and stored on a second hard drive(also backed up on several dvd disks).
I categorized them first by genre(type of music), then by artist, then by song title. It's not perfect, but it works pretty good when you have over 40,000 tunes to sort. I have swing, show tunes, bluegrass, hillbilly, classical, country and western, western swing, r&b, rock and roll from the 50's and 60's, hard rock, soft rock, alternative rock from the 70's, 80's, and 90's, along with about 1500 music videos from acdc to enya. I like most forms of music, but as you can see from this list, there is missing a catagory for rap and hip hop. I really don't consider it music, just call it poetry to a beat. I like poetry, but I like my music to be music and have melody as well as beat. I got some, but most I have heard, I didn't care to rip. hope this helps.

Separate them in different categories. Such as showtunes(plays) in one, big band jazz in other. In each, then put them in alphabetical order by artist.

I do alphabetically. I can remember artists more than songs.
But you can use a website to check the genre of a song..like for example http://en.wikipedia.org
