Get a shoe box and on the outside cover it all over with
(a) Small photos of the family, the kids and make an artwork with the pictures en wining with each other to cover the entire box
OR
(b) Cover the shoe box with clear paper and let the kids draw pictures, symbols, paste photos,a poem or you can write small question on the box like an interview with the family and let the kids answer them in their own writing in their own words. etc What do you Love best about daddy?? and let them answer them

Make this box a servival First aid kit for him and tell him that when he is going he will always have apart of the family with him ALWAYS, you can also put in your favourite things that you dont want to let go in the box, and tell him he has to hold onto them for you and you meet again. You can also put in bandaids, and ice pack etc to make it like a first aid kit. What about putting in his favioute choclaTE in as well :>

Inside you can place a tape or CD with songs you put together that remind you of your Hubby, put happy songs on the tape and let the kids choose some too.

i would get him something you can personalize from the kids (such as a pocket watch with "we love you daddy" engraved). something he can hold dear to him while he's not there. with that i would include pictures the kids have drawn just for him.
