Last week I bought a goldfish and a fish bowl it probably holds a half gallon of water. Yesterday we noticed the fish "blowing bubbles" and he was up at the top of the water line acting like he was trying to get some air. The fish was dead this morning. Now I keep reading that one fish needs 10 gallons of water! Why are fishbowls sold if a fish can't live in one? IF I decide to keep trying with the fish bowl, do I need some kind of filter, pump whatever? Any suggestions would be great.

First of all, these darn fish bowls should be forbidden in the first place, especially for a goldfish
They are only good for shrimps and raising triops in my opinion

goldfish need a filter to survive properly, because they need oxygen in their tank
here is a basic care sheet for you to read up on and learn

Hope that helps
good luck

To begin with, if you bought the fish bowl the same time as the fish this was the first mistake that you made. Fish need benficial bacteria. It takes a little while to build these up in your tank or bowl. My suggestion is that you use a product called "Start Right".

Also you need to make sure that the water is the right tempt. Also make sure that you change the water about every three to four days. You need to get a couple of empty milk jugs and make sure that they are very clean. Fills these up and add your "Start Right" and allow these to sit for a few days before using. The water is then ready for change outs. And will help your fish survive.

Another thing that depends is the size of the bowl to the size of the fish. I personally would not suggest using a fish bowl for anything other than a beta. Instead of a fish bowl, invest in a aquarium. A ten gallon would be great plus, it is in a way least maintance. You can then do a partial water change about every two weeks, this includes vaccuming the gravel. The tank will help provide a more stable environment which will be better for the fish as well as for you.

Okay.

It's true that goldfish need a 10 gallon tank - even then, this is only when they're small, and they will eventually grow to need about 20 gallons each. What's more, they need excellent filtration because of the amount of waste they put out. Your goldfish probably died as a result of lack of oxygen in such a small amount of water (they breathe oxygen dissolved in the water; if they are breathing from the surface, it means there's no more dissolved oxygen for them to breathe), as well as ammonia poisoning because his waste was too concentrated in just half a gallon.

The fish bowls are sold because people believe the myth that goldfish can live in there. They think "goldfish only grow to the size of their container" - what really happens is that their internal organs get stunted when there is no more room to grow. People think they just stop growing, but it's more than that - they become internally deformed and thus can't grow anymore.

I don't suggest you try again with the bowl. If it's a half gallon bowl, I suggest you put some plants and gravel in it, and then keep a few cherry shrimp in there. No fish can live happily in such a small amount of water.

Hi,
A lot of things has killed your goldfish.
First: You never have to have a bowl fish, it's so bad. You have to know some things about the fishes: buy a book or go in the web. You have too fed your fish, feed less.
You can go on http://www.tothefish.com/ to learn somethings about fishes and goldfishes.

fishbowls are not adequate at all. you need a tank with a filter. the filter gets rid of impurities and also aerates the water as it is working. goldfish actually get their oxygen from the surface, the more surface area the better.

Did you know, goldfish get cancer. Ya! Something that is healthy for them to eat, are slices of oranges and lettace. They really do eat it, and it is healthy for them.
Something else that may have happened is, if you bought they fish at a "general" store like Walmart, they generaly scan the bag right over the scanner, and that will poisen them.
Good luck!
