I Have A Relative Who Has A 6yr Old Computer, And Im Building One For Them So They Can Do Simple Things.
IE: Web Surfing, Typing, Pictures, and Maybe Music. Ect.
What i Wanted To Know, Are These Specs Good For Them;
Intel Pentium 4 631 (3.0ghz)
Asrock 775i945GZ Chipset
Corsair 1GB PC2-4200 Value Select (2x512MB)
160GB Maxtor Diamondmax SATA2 2MB
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (DX9.0, Shader 2.0)
NEC ND-5170A-0B 18x DVD-RW Drive

Yes but I would possibly put in 2GB of ram if you are intending to put Windows Vista on the computer.

for a start. if it is for 50yr olds they don't need a 160 gig hard drive, a 60/80 AT will do just fine next they don't need 1 gig of memory, 512 will do just fine,
next what operating system are you going to install on it for them? xp. and what other software are you going to install on it,
you state IE: Web Surfing, Typing, Pictures, and Maybe Music. Ect.
what you need to think about here is the total cost what is it going to really cost them?
XP $120.00
anti virus $50
photo software. $69.00
MS office $150.00
and what ever other software you install..
you have got your labor costs right,,
you need to tell your customers what the actual cost is going to be rather than let them think $350 is going to be the final cost
to keep the cost to what you have now your going to have to install Linux. it is better than Vista premium and cost nothing,,, with all the software they will ever need,,,

The Specs are fine and they will be getting a bargain, quite simply because it is not the cost of the parts that they are getting. Building computers for relatives means that they get 24/7 365 tech support for free for the life the machine.
Been there, seen it, done it and got the tee-shirt.

They look like pretty reasonable specs, although you might be better off looking at an AMD CPU, might be cheaper and it could potentially give better performance. You might also want to have a look at maybe a Celeron CPU?

You might think about a dual core instead of that single core cpu you are using. It will last them longer and when the new programs start to hit the market supporting them they will be ready and waiting.

That is a very decent computer for them, however it obviously depends on what they are going to use it for.
I know people who get the very best in tech just for measly word processing. I know people who don't have the money to buy cutting edge tech that is their livelihood.

Vista I prusume. If not, then increse the RAM and put it on, for the older generation Vista is much easier to use, with a simplistic layout.

it'll be just fine for them. there's nothing they'll need for upgrades until that processor, or the hard drive fails.
