I've never heard of new tyres affecting the speedometer.
A speedo is usually controlled by a cable that connects between the engine and the dashboard. Some systems use an electronic sensor that may have become dirty - time for a steam clean maybe?
However, I HAVE heard that if you have 14" rims and you mod your car to take 17" rims that it can throw off the speedometer because the speedometer accuracy is linked to the circumference of the wheels.

100% no, speedometer works from the gearbox or is electronic, tyre size can affect the acceleration of the vehicle and top speed, heres a tip whenever u get new tyres ask for them to be put on the rear for traction purposes,, tread patterns dont make a difference just make sure the speed and load ratings are the same.. e.g. 195/55/15 87v
87= load rating
v=speed rating

It shouldnt.
Stepping up to a much larger or much smaller tire change can throw your speedometer off as far as accuracy goes - and thats only in a extreme size change. But it should never stop your speedometer from working all together. Its possible they goofed somewhere and unhooked something while working on your car though. Take it back to where you got the tires and ask them.

There are some cars that run there speedometers from the wheels e,g. the newer vectras but I have never seen them damaged just because the wheels have been changed.

No. Fitting new tyres will never affect the speedometer but will affect the fuel consumption if fitted with a wrong size.

No, that wouldn't stop the speedometer from working. You have a sensor on the transmission, that is most likely the problem.

new tyres would not affect the speedo as the drive dog is on the gear box or if digital runs from distributor

No, it wouldn't cause it to stop working. Speedos are driven off the gearbox. You may sometimes see abs or traction control sensors adjacent to the wheels.

My best guess is that whoever did your tire work unwittingly detached the speedometer cable [or had to while working and didnt re-attach it when done].
For sure, though, the tires themselves are not at fault. ;-)
