Sometimes we make assumptions that a particular long-term marriage is happy, even idyllic, yet in time it is revealed that things are not quite what they seem. Couples protect their privacy, put on a brave face - and in so doing create the wrong impression. Others do the opposite, constantly bickering in public, yet it is often just their way of drawing attention and adding a certain 'zest' within their social circle.
So how can we be sure? Only when the break-up transpires.

I am on my 1st marriage, I'll be 34 in 3 mos, he just turned 30. We've been together 12 yrs, married 10, and have 3 kids. (I have 2 others from a prev. relationship). We've had problems, as all relationships do, we've been rocky, we've been on the verge of splitting up. But we always seem to work things out and we're always stronger for it and more in love and tighter than ever...

Only my neighbors. They were happily married for 27 years when the husband died of cancer earlier this year. Both of them were under 50.

Define "long". My wife and I are happy and we've been married for 8 years. My friend and his wife have been married for about 25 years, and they're still happy. They married their other wife in 1998 and all 3 are still together (not mormon or religious, the two wives are bi).

Yes. Lots of people. Happy marriages - and anything nice for that matter - are not at all newsworthy so no-one ever hears about them. We only hear or read about the gory stuff when they go wrong. It's rather sad isn't it.
