You need a pre-amped turntable that has a line out jack, a cord that will connect to both the line-out on the turn table at one end and the computers line-in jack at the other. If neither of these applies you be better off getting one of the USB connection turntables. CircuitCity.com has a couple at fairly reasonable prices. I've included a link to each one of those. If you live somewhere where there is no Circuit City or their website won't deliver to you can still get an idea of what to look for from said links. The first link is for a turntable that is a complete kit for doing it the first method I mentioned and the second link for for one of the USB type turntables.

1) Use an RCA (red/white) to 3.5mm (headphone jack) cable to connect to PC using line-in on your soundcard, if it has one.
2) Use a USB cable from your turntable to your Pc, if your PC has a free USB port and if your Turntable has a USB output, but most do not.
The rest is tweaking with volumes in the Control Panel, so I don't think that is necessary to explain.

if you have an old record player built into a stereo then you just plug stereo to computer in (1/8" side same as headphones)
if you have turntable with ground wire then if your listening to music you probably have it grounded on a mixer or reciever in which case you go from there
then double click that lil speaker icon on the bottom right {or start /all programs/accessories/entertainment..}
go to properties and then to recording
and select line in
you also will have on playback before you go to recording line in volume
you'll have to find the right adjustment after a try
u don't wanna use stereo mix because that will record every little sound on your computer (good for youtube music videos)
then you'll need something to record to
i use adobe audition but i bet they have free ones on CNET
here's a random one
they have more but it had decent reviews

basically spend a few bucks on a cord
and that's it
