The invention of the idea that we can make the world a better place. For example when man asked how can we feel warmer so they invented fire.

Probably working sewers. Life-span immediately went up. Larger cities became a viable reality.
Basic inventions like the bow and arrow and the hammer and so forth aside, it's probably sewage management.

Culture. Without it even the greatest technological inventions would only last for so long unless the knowledge of previous generations could be transmitted to future generations; and that is what culture is for.
