I was 13. If she doesn't have armpit hair or pubic hair or her period then she really is too young to shave her legs. I would really sit my girl down and ask her why she is concerned about shaving her legs at 8 yrs old. Does she want to be sexy? IS she worried what boys think? Or is it just that there is some other little girl at her school that started shaving her legs and she wants to try it. I think a good rule of thumb is when she needs to start shaving underarm hair then she can also shave her legs.

8 seems awfully young...12 sounds like a good age to me. I actually first shaved my legs when I was 10 out of curiosity and wanting to be like my older sister, lol
But I didn't start regularly shaving my legs until I was about 12 or 13.

Anyway, I think I would make an exception if the hair was really dark or noticeable and she just wanted to shave because it was embarrassing.

8??? Hell No.

I am a mother to 4 girls and none of them started shaving until they were around 13.
One didnt start until she was 17.

It depends on their hair - if my daughter had thick black hair then I would consider having it waxed on a regular basis to help decrease the hair growth. You have to take into account their peers as well and what is happenig with other girls they are friend with.

I think at 8 they are quite worldly but have to be gently reminded that they are still little girls.

Its sad that an 8 year old would even think about it

It depends on how hairy her legs are and how that makes her feel. Ask her why she wants to shave? IS it because other kids are making fun of her hairy legs? If so, then let her do it. Just tell her the correct way.

Shaving does NOT make hair grow back faster OR darker! That is an old wives tale.

8?!? I don't think that she needs to worry about her self-image so much at such a young age. I started when I was 12, and that was still pretty young. Wait until she is at least 12, and going into 6th grade. Before then, there is no need. What's she going to do, show off her hairless legs at the playground? I'm just kidding, but still, she really should wait. Good luck.

This is what my mama suggested and I think that it is a good suggestion-it just depends on the color of the hair. If your daughter is fair skinned like my daughter and has dark hair on her legs and you can stand from at least two to three feet away and can see it-its time to teach her. My daughter was nine years old when I bought her first razor and shaving cream.

I think that's insane. What are her reasonings for needing to do so? Really I don't think it's necessary. And there can be disadvantages to starting so early, like how it starts to grow back faster, by 12 she'll have to do it every day to prevent stubble, and then she'll probably start getting bad ingrown hairs and all. Not to mention it sounds like she might have self-image issues. I think you have to figure out what the problem is here because that doesn't sound normal.

my mom "said" 12, however her friend gave me a shaving "kit" for my 11th birthday. i have an older sister, and my mom's friend knew what it was like to be the younger sister. i would say between 11, and 12. i will say that was a long time ago...parents don't want to be parents, and let their kids do all of the "milestones" too early!
take into consideration how hairy she is, and how she will handle this new found freedom. please encourage her to be a little girl for a few more years... YOU be strong!

in the grand scheme of things, shaving her legs is not a challenge...take her shopping and let her pick our a razor(even hot pink will shave) and some gel and let her go...it makes her part of the group...a bit grown...shows she is attentive to her appearance...and will make her fit in...all for the cost of a razor and some gel. chances are she may have already experimented with shaving while at a sleepover!
challenges in the preteen and teen years are many and serious...hairy legs are easily taken care of and shaving will make her feel good about herself and the changes to come.
