the double 'those' bothers me.

It's incorrect because the subject, "those diamonds," equals the pronoun "they." You are saying, "They aren't real, are they?"

Tag questions only use subject pronouns, like "they, you, he, she, we, I, and it." You can't, for instance, say, "John isn't insane, is John?" You would have to use "he" to replace the second John. Hope this helps.

Those diamonds aren't real, are they?

The "aren't" and "are" ARE in their respective places. Only the double "those" is the mistake in your sentence.

It's 'Those diamonds aren't real, are they?' 'They' is the correct pronoun to represent 'those diamonds'. Even if the sentence was 'Those aren't real, are they?' 'they' is still correct rather than 'those'.
