Or was George Bernard Shaw's just a jealous old man ?

8 out of 8 say it is wasted on them so far. It would be nice to have our teen years back to waste though wouldn't it?

OTOH, we think we'd do so much better if we could couple the wisdom of our experience with the energy of our youth.

But maybe some of the energy of our youth came from the fact we didn't have any idea about what we were doing? With experience comes second-guessing, and not trying new things because we "know" they won't work. So I suspect that youth would be wasted on the old, too.

(-: Shaw was a crank. A brilliant crank, a very funny crank, but still, a crank. I'm sure half the things he said, he didn't really believe in. He just said 'em for laughs. Which isn't a bad way to live, actually.

There is a song on Brian Wilson's superb 'Smile' album called 'Child is father of the man'. Most people would think the other way around (that a man is father of a child) which is also true however the decisions that you make at the start of your life affect your later life.

Life may be wasted on some of the young but it is wasted on a lot more of the old who regret decisions that they took and wish for the innocence of youth (but cannot have it as they are no longer innocent).

Why don't some youths appreciate youth? Well maybe that is because they have to spend every day sharing the world with cynical, burnt out adults who tend to be far more successful, materially speaking. The child rightly thinks 'what did they do to deserve all that success?' And the answer is often 'not a lot'.

I don't know if it is wasted, for when you are young your mind is young and your thoughts are young.

As you get older you see things in a different prespective and think to ourselves that from this more mature prespective we would have done things differently. But then it wouldn't be the same youth, would it? It would be a mature thinking younger person.

So what you end up with is not so much youth being wasted as wasted mature people dreaming for a second chance at being younger.

g-day!

I really do think it is. If I had known in my teenage years what I know now I would have done things very very differently. What you do in your younger years affects your later life and opportunities so much but you havent really got the maturity and experience to make the right decisions.

And you dont appreciate the freedom you have when you're young, that the world is your oyster etc and before you know it you're stuck in a dead end job with an idiot spouse and wishing you'd made more of your youth. oh god maybe I'm just a jealous old woman at the grand old age of 27!!

no he wasn't jealous he was just stating that youth has all the ability, enthusiasm, prospects, idea's and passion that you lose as you get older and wiser. If you knew what you knew when you were an old experienced person when you were young...you could utilise those skills without wasting them!!

Youth is wasted on the young...they don't do much with it...whereas an older person would LOVE all the energy and passion youth brings with it...that feeling of being invincible....that you are going to live forever...that nothing is impossible.....

When you get older you know these things are not...quite....true!

No it is not. Youth is a part of the process towards adulthood. You have to crawl before you can walk-ergo-youth is a learning time-an experimenting time-a searching and evaluating time-that is preparing us for the time when we have to quit crawling and stand on our own two feet without our parents there to hold us up or pick us up.

It is a time to enjoy the fun things of life before tackling the nitty gritty issues of adulthood.
It is a time to learn to share and a time to realize that everything in the world is not ours.

It is a time for parents to be able to cuddle and hug their children because that time period is very short. Hopefully though, youth Will never, even into adulthood and old age, outgrow the need for hugs. I am all for youth-the young growing period of our life which never stops when one comes to think of it.

The energies of youth would be able to accomplish great things when combined with the wisdom of the old. The old have the experience to know what to do, they just no longer have the energy.

Youth is wasted on the young. They spend so much time indoors and not enough outside and exploring the world around them.

No, youth is definately wasted on the young...they spend more time moaning and groaning about the dumbest things and not enjoying the best time of their life.....

Not necessarily wasted but usually not well spent or appreciated, since the young tend to not be aware of it's value when they have it. This can be evidenced by kids crying over not getting some small item they wanted. As an adult, we all wish our own problems were that small.
