I'm not the biggest KISS fan, but they're music is good enough for me to listen to at least (I only know three songs: Detroit Rock City, Rock 'n' Roll All Nite, and Lick It Up). But looking at some album reviews, it's instantly recognizable that KISS's musical quality was declining quickly. Based on critic reviews, I say they began to sharply decline after Lick It Up. But I want to hear the fans. What album started their downfall?

Different eras:
Dynasty/Unmasked era.
Mid 80s was as successful as Destroyer era but Gene wasn't involved in recording and writing that much, instead trying his hand at "acting". But it was still a great band that did well live everywhere. They did go into ballad territory, but "Tears are Falling" is still one of their best selling songs and "Forever" was a big hit. Late 80s-early 90s they were selling out places and "Revenge" was prob. their best CD since the 70s. Carr/Kulick era were better than Ace and Peter. "Carnival of Souls" they tried to sound like other 90s era rock bands but it fell flat. "Psycho Circus" isn't vintage KISS and other than the title track and video the rest is forgettable.

KISSOlogy Vol 2 (1978-1991) is out so judge for yourself. I'm thinking Vol 3 is going to have "Unplugged" (out of print on DVD), which does showcase their songs and playing than it does the gimmicks and they pull it off.

Lou Reed and Bob Dylan have written with Gene Simmons, little known fact. Randy Newman almost talked Don Henley into recording a KISS song for The Eagles to do.

They started going downhill after the release of Dynasty. I was glad when, in the nineties, the original four members put the makeup back on and toured. Those were some good concerts. I've been a Kiss fan since the seventies.

I am not a KISS fan but some of their earlier songs are decent. Probably what started their "decline" was when they released their "disco" album and I have no idea what it was called. "Rock Stars" do NOT record and release disco records. They lost a tremendous amount of credibility over that blunder.

After Creatures Of The Night if you ask me. Ilike about 20 KISS songs from the period up to and including that album and exactly one song since which was let's put the X in sex.

Honestly, I think the music hasn't declined but the way we listen to it has changed.
We're so into the new bands that when we listen to Kiss it sounds worn out, dated, faded.

I do still like Kiss.
Very much, indeed!
I think they rock!

Probably the first one..............No groups last any amount of time in this day and age. Legends have not been made since the seventies.
