Yes, the G standard card in the new computer should detect and be backwards compatible with the B Standard router. Looking closely at the specs of the new wireless card it should say something like

On the other hand whilst you are buying the new computer, look at the prices of new routers, they have fallen a lot in price. You may even get your supplier to offer you one cheaper if bundled with the computer.

Apart from the speed upgrade, it would be an idea to upgrade your security. Your B standard router probably only supports WEP, which has been broken and can be hacked. A new G standard router will support WPA-PSK which is a lot safer and not difficult to configure.

If your new computer comes with a 802.11g wireless card, it will work with your present 802.11b router. Of course it will connect at a slower speed, but for Internet surfing you shouldn't notice much of a problem.

doesn't matter which flavor of Wi-Fi you use past B in a home network as you will never utilize all of that bandwidth
