I think it would depend on how fast you can run. But if you do run, don't do like I did and run inside a camp sight bathroom because the dang bear stayed right outside the door for 16 hours and the smell of that bathroom in 102*weather all day really sucked! But, then again, I guess it could have been worse, the bear could have caught me.

Bears are faster than people. The best thing you can do is to back away slowly, and appear non- threatening. Especially true with a mother who has young.

There are about 10% of bears who predate. Those are the ones you have to try to keep away from, or intimidate back.

If you have food on you, drop the food and keep moving away from it. Most of the time, they'll focus on that and leave you alone.

I only ran into one bear in all my hiking. Literally, went around a corner and there was one coming towards. I was stupid and I ran back the way I came, and went up a tree (all the wrong things to do). When I looked back, he was running the other way and screaming like a banshee. I was lucky in my stupidity, and I think he was a youngster.

When you encounter a bear you should -
1) walk away diagonally and facing them. This is non-aggressive and you will see what they are doing.

2) make lots of noise as this may scare them away.

If a bear attacks-
1) Curl up in a foetal position and say a little prayer.

Saying that, I encountered one in Alaska and nearly weed myself. Luckily it just crossed the road and ignored me.

Hope that helps.

A bear can run faster than you can, plus you are frightened, you will probably be looking backwards to see how far away the beast is, this will all work in favour for the bear.

The bear is in its natural habitat, it is used to running over rocks, round trees; it probably knows what is coming next, you are in an alien environment. Survival may be telling you to run away fast but don't.

Yes and you should throw it your backpack.

Saw this Bear Joke:-

A pastor in Maine skipped services one Sunday to go bear hunting. Along the trail he turned a corner and collided with a bear. the pastor stumbled, backwards, slipped off the trail, and began tumbling down the mountain, the bear in hot pursuit. Finally the pastor crashed into a bolder, breaking both his legs and sending his rifle flying through the air, just out of his reach. As the bear closed in, the pastor cried out "Lord, I'm sorry for what I have done. Please forgive me and save me! - Lord please make this bear a Christian". Suddenly the bear skipped to a halt at the pastor's feet, fell to it's knees, clasped it's paws together, began to weep and said "God bless this food which I am about to receive!"

Bears will definately catch you if you run..... you look just like dinner! However I heard that if you shout and scream and make a lot of noise you can actually scare them off.

Heck no!!!! They say not to run because you excite them, but I'm not going to lay there and wait on it to rip me to shreds either. I'll run and try to keep away from it behind trees or something. If it decides to swat you while you're in the fetal position, you're a goner any way, may as well try to get away.
